Electric Bass Guitar

The electric bass guitar usually comes in one of two varieties: fretted or fretless. For the vast majority of bass players, the fretted models are preferred because they are easier to play. Fretless basses are generally the domain of jazz player or the highly-skilled rock/fusion bassist.

In most cases, an electric bass guitar will have four strings. There are exceptions to this rule, however, and basses that use six strings or more can be found. The extra strings are used to increase the sonic range of the instrument.

Considered one of the greatest electric bass guitar players of all time, Jaco Pastorius is cited as an influence by many of today’s top musicians. He is the only electric bass player that has ever been inducted into DownBeat magazine’s hall of fame, not an unremarkable feat considering he died at the early age of thirty-five.
